HARVEY: An Interactive Experience
Harvey is a timeless virtual 3D interactive environment based on the academic hall by the same name. Created by more than 40 students of the University of Wisconsin–Stout, Harvey will allow users to enter the virtual space and meet historical characters, such as Lorenzo Dow Harvey, whom was president at the college from 1903-1922.Users will also be able to interact with important objects, accomplish mini-missions and relive the significant history of Stout.
Some of the environments of Harvey were already created when I was brought on the team, but they were missing the objects and clutter that help tell the whole story. My focus for some of this project was creating generic and unique objects that would populate the rooms and hallways and finalizing finished rooms.
The last few weeks of the project were spent in Unity, dressing each of the rooms. The environments needed to feel used, but not dirty or cluttered. Finding that balance lead to a more "lived-in" feel for the environments.
The style of the game had been decided before I was brought on, so I had to ensure that all the textures I was making matched the agreed aesthetic. The style tread lightly between realistic and painterly, though each object needed to be recognizable and match one of the two time periods.
Though not officially launched, an unveiling of the game was held in early May 2015. To advertise and display the game, I created a series of posters featuring the logo of the project as well as a silhouette of Lorenzo Harvey.
